Djebra (pro. Jebra) (b. 01.95)
Djebra is a male Red Tailed Guenon and arrived at the Haven on the 25th August 2010. In 2001 Djebra was confiscated from a private home due to being kept illegally as a pet and re-homed at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire. Twycross paired Djebra with another guenon but sadly she recently died and they were unable to pair him again. Due to Twycross needing the space to continue their vital work in breeding and conservation of endangered species we were asked to take care of him.
Djebra has settled in well at the Haven and enjoys the entertainment from his neighbours. He has a friendly nature, calm personality and loves foraging for his food which is scattered around the enclosure by his keepers. Djebra especially likes Lettuce followed closely by grapes!

Guenons feed heavily on the fruit from strychnos mitus a tree species found in the Kabale Forest. As they eat the fruit they spit the intact seeds, which fall to the rainforest floor where the seeds can successfully germinate. This method of seed sowing produces more saplings than the fruit would produce.
The name 'red tail' comes from the chestnut coloured fur on the underside of the tail.
Their visual communication system consists of eyebrow raising, facial skin stretching, and head bobbing. These signals are commonly used to warn potential predators or unwanted intruders.
Adults store fruit in their large cheek pouches in order to take their meal to an area free of threat or theft by other monkeys.
Guenons have recognisable features such as a black face, bluish skin around the eyes, a white spot on the nose and white cheek fur. The body is covered with a speckled brown coat, grey or black limbs depending on the sub species and a long tail which is red on the underside.
