BONO AND KAJAN

MUELLER'S GIBBON - Hylobates muelleri

Bono (b.1984) and Kajan (b.1995) are mother and daughter and came to the Haven from a zoo when Bono's partner died. This is because the zoo needed the space and resources they were using to set up a breeding pair.

Bono is very laid back while cheeky daughter Kajan rules the roost often stealing food off her mother.

Kajans behaviour and dominance over Bono has improved considerably since arriving at the Haven. Kajan is still quite fiesty but not so aggressive.

You will see mother and daughter call a couple of times a day to secure their territory and when they finish run towards each other for a cuddle.

Their favourite treat is grapes.

ABOUT MUELLER'S GIBBONS

This small gibbon is unusual in that it shows no sexual dimorphism, both the male and female look the same and have the same colour fur.

Mueller Gibbons travel through the trees via a swinging motion called brachiation. They are very agile and extend their elongated arms over their heads in order to hook their hands onto the branches.

They have a throat sac located beneath the chin to help enhance their calls. Vocalisations can be heard in the morning when securing their territory and male and female sing duets to reinforce their bond.

Males and females live together in monogamous pairs with their offspring in a close family group. Offspring leave when they are fully mature and go in search of a mate.

Mueller Gibbons are also known as grey gibbons. They have grey or brown fur and a lighter shade of fur surrounding the outline of their face. They have long canine teeth, no tail and the hair on the top of their head is darker than their body hair.
